Terminology Associated with Yachts

Stern or Aft: The rear segment of a boat.
Bow: The forward end of a boat.

Fly Deck  : An outdoor deck that is usually elevated, often for navigation or lounging purposes

Inboard/Outboard Engines : Inboard engines are those fitted within the hull, whereas outboard engines are mounted outside.

Lower Deck : Indicates the lower portion of the yacht which typically contains cabins and storage.

Salon : The main living space inside the yacht, somewhat similar to a living room.

Hull  :The main body of the yacht sitting in the water.

Keel: The structural bottom of the boat providing stability and balance.

Beam: The largest part of the boat, which contributes to stability and interior room.

Draft : The vertical distance measured from the water line to the lowest point of the boat,

Helm  : Everything where the captain commands the ship- the steering wheel and the controls.

Bildge : The lowest part of the boat hull where water collects and gets discharged.

Cleat: A metal fitting on the ship to which ropes or lines are secured.

Deck : The flat surface that covers the hull and forms part of the boat’s floor.

Fender  : A cushion or bumper placed between the boat and a dock or another vessel to avoid abrasion.
Gangway: A narrow passageway that connects the ship to the port for boarding.

Mooring: The process of fastening a boat to a dock, buoy, or anchor.

Tender : A small vessel designed to carry personnel or supplies to and from a larger yacht.
